CNN —As one of the lead negotiators for students protesting inside the grounds of Columbia University, Mahmoud Khalil said his primary objective was to get the university to sever all financial ties with Israel. Khalil said Columbia never put anything in writing, instead making offers verbally. But without a firm promise, Columbia’s offer didn’t go far enough for Khalil and other protesters, since the university had previously rejected divestment proposals. Khalil said they then presented Columbia with another offer: Rather than dump Israel-tied investments, Columbia could instead divest from weapons manufacturing companies and any companies complicit in violating international law. The steel frame of the Francis Scott Key Bridge sits on top of the container ship Dali after the bridge collapsed on Tuesday. After the 1980 collision, he argued, more substantial dolphins or a fendering system should have been added to the Key Bridge. “You knock out one of the support posts, the entire bridge collapses.”The Key Bridge is hardly unique among large bridges in its age. Some other bridges that cross major shipping routes are designed with more extensive protections than the Key Bridge’s. In the wake of the Key Bridge collapse and with the rise of larger container ships, some experts said that engineers should reassess necessary bridge safety features.

Opinion | Is the Trump Threat Too Serious for Humor?

To the Editor:Re “I’ve Told My Last Trump Joke,” by David Kamp (Opinion guest essay, Jan. 24):I encourage Mr. Kamp to keep telling Donald Trump jokes. Mr. Trump is a serious threat to American democracy and the institutions of a pluralistic society, so I understand Mr. Kamp’s fear that jokes make the danger seem trivial. However, alongside every joke aimed at deflating Mr. Trump stands the fact that 74 million American citizens voted for him in 2020, and even more may vote for him and autocracy in 2024. Certainly, Mr. Kamp needs better jokes than the sophomoric epithet “short-fingered vulgarian,” which merely places the comic on the same immature level as Mr. Trump. But jokes that remind us of his disdain for democracy, pluralism and decency can be a powerful weapon against Mr. Trump’s campaign.

Donald Trump Isn’t Funny Anymore - The New York Times

The person of whom I speak is, of course, Donald Trump. So when I came across a fledgling satirical magazine, Spy, that articulated precisely what I was thinking, I was smitten. In its inaugural issue, Spy named Mr. Trump one of the “10 Most Embarrassing New Yorkers,” noting his tackiness, his shady tactics as a landlord and his “hustler-on-his-best-behavior manner.” Yes! I joined the staff full-time in 1989 and we continued to chronicle Mr. Trump’s offenses against taste and decency. We came up with a slew of epithets for him, including the one that stuck, “short-fingered vulgarian.” Then, as now, Mr. Trump was thin-skinned, and obsessed with his press coverage.

Since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade more than a year ago, voters have defeated ballot measures that would have restricted abortion rights in other red states such as Kansas and Kentucky.

The proposed consumer-owned utility would take over power delivery, including thousands of miles of transmission and distribution lines the two current utilities collectively own. Photo: Robert F. Bukaty/Associated PressMaine’s voters will decide Tuesday whether to take a rare step: a hostile takeover of their biggest electric companies. A measure on the ballot there would create a consumer-owned replacement called “Pine Tree Power” by buying out two investor-owned companies that currently serve nearly all Mainers. Proponents, which include some environmental groups, politicians and a nursing union, say wresting control from the for-profit companies will eventually lead to lower bills, better customer service and a speedier shift to renewable power. Utilities and Maine’s governor say takeover would saddle the state with debt.

It’s unclear how much money Hamas has received in cryptocurrency, but there’s evidence they have amassed significant amounts. Another $94 million was allegedly held by the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, a militant partner of Hamas, according to Elliptic, another analytics firm. Hamas additionally raises funds through informal taxes and smuggling, according to a Congressional Research Service report from May. Investigators were able to seize 150 cryptocurrency accounts “that laundered funds to and from” Hamas accounts, according to a DOJ news release.
